Best Friends Utah, Animal Sanctuary

The Best friends Utah animal sanctuary is located in Kanab Utah and is home to 2,000 different animals from ordinary cats and dogs, to Horses goats and Birds.

Their mission is to simply make sure there are “No more homeless Pets”. And even pets that they cannot find a home for are welcome to stay there forever. No animal should have to be euthanized simply because they do not have a family.

Many people are familiar with the sanctuary through the show “Dogtown” where unwanted and deserted dogs are sent to get rehabilitated and are found loving families. In fact after the NFL football player Michael Vick was caught forcing dogs to fight, 22 of his old pitbulls where sent to the sanctuary.

When I visited they said one of the dogs has already been adopted and the others are well on their way.

But Dogtown isn’t the only area in the sanctuary. The 38,000 acres owned and 30,000 acres rented by the park is home to anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 animals at any given day.

In addition to Dogtown there is Catworld, Bunnyhouse, HorseHeaven, ParrotGarden, PiggyParadice, and Wildfriends each helping animals find their own home. The nice thing about this place is if animals cannot find a home they are welcome to stay at Best Friends for the rest of their lives. It is a great place for animal lovers to visit.

If you get there in the early afternoon there are a number of tours you can take where you can meet many of the animals. I got there at 3:21 so I was only able to go on their last tour of the day, which drives you around the park and lets you see the animals, but doesn’t let you get out of the van, so get there early.

P.S. The Best Friends Utah animal sanctuary is also located on land that was used a lot in old western movies; in fact it once was nicknamed “Little Hollywood”. Let’s see if you recognize any of these.
